[01:40:33] <ponder> Hi folks. I have a rather strange problem with a friend of mine, who has his jabber account on jabber.org, while I have my jabber account on a different server (creshal.de). While he can send messages to me just fine, I always get an 503 Error when trying to send a message to him. I know that 503 is supposed to be a temporary error but I've been getting this error for about a week now. Is this some configuration error on our side or is this a problem between the different servers our accounts are on?

[15:33:14] <ThurahT> yay, successfully managed to connect after ~8 hours..
[15:35:42] <vilius> same here. I wonder if the long awaited upgrade has happened :)
[15:36:13] <ThurahT> maybe? : )

[16:25:36] <vilius> no idea, but I sure hope so :)
[16:27:29] <vilius> though, ping is still big. Maybe that's due to a huge number of reconnects.

[16:33:38] * vilius joined the chat.
[16:37:30] <PaulFertser> vilius: thinking about this a bit more, if this was actually an upgrade, i'd expect Kev to lurk here waiting for congratulations (or complaints).
[17:08:11] <vilius> oh, just noticed I already had a disconnect. That leaves little hope the miracle has happened.
[17:11:08] <PaulFertser> Damn
[17:11:10] <PaulFertser> :(

[17:53:46] <Donovan> We're currently out of miracles (as evidenced by my failure to win the powerball lottery)
[17:54:34] <Kev> We'll almost certainly announce the upgrade before it happens.
[17:55:06] <Kev> That was the backup process hitting enough disk to cause all the other processes to swamp, I think. Although I'm only just home, so not sure.
[17:55:27] <PaulFertser> Kev: Alex told me before that the upgrade takes that long because it needs some considerable preparations to be seamless, sounds a bit ironic given all the recent issues.
[17:55:47] <Kev> I don't think anyone's claiming it's going to be seamless.
[17:56:21] <Kev> It just requires considerable effort (read: new code written) to maximise the chance that it isnt painful.
[17:56:24] <Donovan> Kev, when you get a moment, there's a private question for you
[17:56:39] <PaulFertser> I think that's what Alex told me...
[17:56:47] <Donovan> But at least it's unrelated to the upgrade :)
[17:57:11] <PaulFertser> Kev: it sounds really strange given that it is supposed to be "just" a move to the new hardware.
[17:57:32] <Kev> Is it?
[17:57:38] <Kev> That's news to me.
[17:58:03] <Donovan> /me laughs at "just"
[17:58:25] <Donovan> (only because I'm recalling my most recent 'just a move to new hardware' adventure)
[17:58:35] <PaulFertser> Kev: well, probably i'm misunderstanding something but there were discussions about moving to new hardware but not anything software-related.
[17:59:08] <Kev> We're looking at migrating to new hardware at the same time as upgrading the software of both the DSA and XMPPd, skipping two or possibly three major versions in the process.
[17:59:32] <Kev> And then setting up clustering of the XMPPd and a failover group for the DSA.
[18:02:27] <PaulFertser> Now that explains it :)
[18:09:33] <vilius> Kev: thanks for explaining. As I've said already, all the stability issues from a user's perspective are a lot more frustrating simply for the lack of information. Resolving them would, of course, be nice too. :)
[18:12:00] * vilius left the chat.
[18:24:17] <Kev> There's a couple of reasons for the current stability issues, I'm hoping they all go away once we upgrade both the hardware and software.
[18:25:29] <PaulFertser> Kev: thank you for caring, that's really appreciated. I'd be willing to get a little more feedback from you and the team though on the official site or identica, i'm feeling sort of uneasy trying to pull the details directly from you, i hope you do not mind much :)
