[06:17:52] <Link Mauve> Actually the issue is from the server your JID is on (Ejabberd and M-Link are known to do that), when they get a message addressed to an inexistant resource, they consider it as directed to the bare JID, without sending an error so that the emitter knows about it. So look at the following scenario: you join the MUC, at some moment you somehow get disconnected from your server without sending to the MUC you aren’t there anymore, then you reconnect with another resource and rejoin the MUC. Now that MUC thinks (with reason) that you are here from two resources and sends you the messages to both resources, but your server redirects the one sent to the dead resource to the current one, resulting in every message appearing as two messages.

[07:59:34] <Kev_> Link Mauve: Slightly true, but mostly not. The reason old M-Links did that (it hasn't for years, but jabber.org's running old code) is because 3921 mandated it. M-Link was updated when 6121 was published. But that won't affect anyone in this room, people in here getting duplicated messages will be either a client bug or because they're on Google, which has a bug that stops it working properly with MUCs.

[08:01:59] <Kev_> No idea, I don't work on ejabberd, and the latest one isn't free any more, is it?
[08:02:17] <Link Mauve> The 2.x is still used a lot in the wild.
[08:02:53] <Link Mauve> And everyone I’ve seen with that issue was using either Ejabberd 2.x or jabber.org, I didn’t know google had a similar issue.

[08:03:35] <Kev_> It's to do with resending join requests without the client wanting to, so that the room thinks the client is trying to rejoin and resends all the history.
