[01:05:24] <Timon> generally speaking, when adding a node to an operational xmpp cluster in which each node already has a populated and synchronized DB, can the new node be hot-plugged?, and is the DB on the new node automatically synchronized with the rest of the cluster? or must the cluster be taken down to add the new node?
[01:06:27] <deryni> That's not a question that has a "generally speaking" answer.
[01:07:06] <deryni> Since it depends entirely on the DB software (and possibly configuration) and the XMPP software (and possibly configuration).
[01:08:06] <Timon> do you know the answer for ejabberd?
[01:13:42] <deryni> I believe the answer, years ago, was that when using mnesia you could bring the new node up (just erlang connectivity) then add the db replication and let that sync and then start the ejabberd node fully. But, and I cannot stress this enough, I only vaguely recall that so I could be wrong, I have no idea if that is still true (assuming I recall correctly) and I have no idea what the case is for the other DB options.
[01:24:53] <Timon> deryni: thank you ... there's hasn't been any activity on the ejabberd xmpp chat since i posted 5 hours ago, and the last message posted to the online ejabberd board was 9 days ago ... any idea where else to go for a current ejabbard discussion?
[01:27:38] <deryni> Nope. That's why I asked where you said you saw "recent activity and support" when you first showed up. The only places I know of are dead quiet most of the time. Though I suppose the P1 issue tracker might have activity I don't pay it any attention (same for the ejabberd.im forums though I've gotten the sense from other people that those are dead too).
[01:42:23] <stpeter> Timon: you might want to dig a bit into the history of ejabberd
[01:44:56] <stpeter> Timon: the reason you are not seeing much activity at ejabberd.im might be that ejabberd at this point is more of a commercial product (sold by Process-One) than it is an active, community-based, open-source project - although as I understand it the "community edition" has now been forked by Erlang Solutions to produce the MongooseIM server -- it's a bit of a tangled story and I don't claim to know all the details, so I encourage you to look into it yourself
[01:46:20] <Timon> i was under the impression that process-one was maintaining the open-source ejabberd, but maybe that's wrong, and that's what i meant by recent support ... as for ejabberd recent activity, come to think of it the use-cases i've read about are all about 6 years old (~2008) ... yesterday stpeter mentioned that the "most actively developed servers are Prosody, ejabberd, and Tigase" ... so basically i'm looking for an xmpp server that's open-source and with good community support, any ideas?
[01:47:43] <stpeter> Timon: IMHO the most active community is Prosody
[01:48:29] <stpeter> Tigase is a bit more of a closed team, not so much active community AFAICS although the Tigase developers are a good bunch of folks
[01:49:16] <stpeter> ejabberd is a bit all over the map and it's hard for me to see exactly where things stand given P1's commercial ejabberd, the "community edition" ejabberd or whatever it's called, and MongooseIM

[12:08:48] <Maranda> imho... frankly guys you should widen your views a bit... ^^
[12:16:50] <Alex> Maranda: can you elaborate?
[12:20:21] * Valérian left the chat.
[12:22:43] * Lloyd left the chat.
[12:23:29] <Maranda> Like that, looking at dull data, the currently most actively developed server is Metronome and not Prosody..?
[12:26:40] * dezant left the chat.
[12:27:26] <Tobias> http://www.ohloh.net/p/compare?project_0=Metronome+IM&project_1=Prosody&project_2=prosody-modules activity is a vague metric
[12:27:48] <Tobias> one could go for commits, or for active developers over some term
[12:28:53] <Zash> Didn't Peter say "most active community"?
[12:29:06] <Maranda> No
[12:29:46] <Maranda> if he did I wouldn't have complained
[12:29:50] <Zash> Because I totally didn't copypaste that.
[12:31:01] <Tobias> :)
[12:32:12] * Maranda joined the chat.
[12:33:24] <Maranda> And Tobias, if you want to look at commits (not at Ohloh because how it counts data is debatable) you can put numbers like you want but Metronome still has a stabler higher rate then prosody in Shorter and Longer term.
[12:34:33] <mathieui> but stpeter still said “community” anyway
[12:34:49] <Tobias> Maranda, sure...but #of commits says little about activity...you can split stuff it tiny commits or do bigger ones...i'd say a better metric is number of days with a commit or so in a given recent time frame
[12:35:24] <Maranda> Tobias, and that's higher also... ^^
[12:36:23] <Tobias> Maranda, and what's wrong with the way ohloh counts commits?
[12:37:08] <Maranda> << Yesterday stpeter mentioned that the most actively developed servers are "Prosody, ejabberd and Tigase" >>
[12:37:55] <Tobias> Maranda, maybe he didn't know abut metronome?
[12:38:14] <Maranda> Tobias, it easily double counts stuff if you have multiple repositories
[12:38:42] <Maranda> (The count for Metronome is wrong)
[12:38:58] <Maranda> Tobias, I hardly doubt it
[12:39:00] <Tobias> ah..ok
[12:40:34] <Maranda> I like to think that often Metronome is just... lost in transition ^^. brb.
[12:42:01] <Tobias> well..there are tons of XMPP servers...i imagine it's hard to keep track of them, especially if you have a ton of other stuff to deal with than developing a server and keeping an eye on other server developments
[12:44:05] * dezant joined the chat.
[12:45:31] <louiz’> also, does it really matter?
[12:46:10] <Kev> Peter didn't mention M-Link either, and I'm pretty sure that has more active development than several of the ones he mentioned. I just didn't feel the need to argue ;)
[12:46:22] <louiz’> Someone forgot about the existence of your server, big deal. Just raise your voice to fix that, and that’s ok
[12:49:49] * Maranda left the chat.
[12:49:55] * Maranda joined the chat.
[12:54:37] <Tobias> Kev, the person explicitly asked for open-source, not? :)
[12:54:47] <Maranda> Kev, more than arguing It was more a generic attempt at hinting, at start (widen your views statement), but I was asked to elaborate and so I did.
[12:54:48] <Kev> I missed that.
[12:57:21] <Maranda> And since when it comes to OS servers it's always "ejabberd, Prosody, Tigase" repeatedly in different order I feelt that a little distinguo was in order this time (louiz’ ^^)

[20:31:32] <deryni> If you mean the room history you get whatever the server has modulus what your client requests. The server may only have that many messages to give you.
[20:33:11] <Zash> Either go back in time and be here when they were talking, or forward in time until the server gets MAM support
