[06:52:13] <juanito003> hello
[06:52:38] <juanito003> Hi to everyone here
[06:52:43] <Alex> hello juanito003
[06:53:14] <juanito003> I just would like to know something about your xmpp usage
[06:53:56] <Alex> go ahead and ask
[06:54:05] <juanito003> Do you use this feature called OTR (Off The Record). Your chat is encrypted between you and your friend. How many of you here are using this?
[06:55:33] <Alex> I personally don't use it, I use TLS encryption. But OTR is great and I personally would like to see it in more clients
[06:55:49] * dynam1te joined the chat.
[06:56:12] <juanito003> ok great thanks Alex, what clien do you use? I'm using jisti
[06:56:18] <juanito003> jitsi
[06:56:26] <Alex> mostly Psi or Psi+
[06:57:01] <juanito003> and is TLS activated by default or does the two friends have to activate it?
[06:57:27] <Alex> it should be default in all clients
[06:57:35] <juanito003> It's sad Psi+ does not include OTR in the latest version
[06:57:43] <juanito003> else I would use it
[06:57:49] <Alex> but the problem with TLS is that only the connection from you to your server is encrypted
[06:57:58] <juanito003> ah ok, I see
[06:58:07] <Alex> and you don't know if the encryption of your chat buddy is encrypted as well
[06:58:18] <juanito003> yeah right
[06:58:32] <Alex> so it does not help when yours is encrypted but not your buddys connection
[06:58:48] <Alex> or when you buddy is on a srver which supports no TLS at all
[06:59:14] <Alex> but the same is with OTR, bit must use a client which supports it
[06:59:27] <Alex> bit=both
[07:00:11] <juanito003> Exactly. I'm French and would like all my contact to use OTR with me, but that's reasonably not possible. But most off my friends are using facebook, so there is a lot to explain to them
[07:00:41] * veftapang joined the chat.
[07:00:49] <Alex> yes
[07:01:21] <juanito003> I'm coming from the http://www.opendiscussionday.org website and there should be a line that explains OTR at least.
[07:03:52] <veftapang> how can i get the list of rooms from this server?

[17:47:19] <pierce27976> I'm totally confused. Any help would be really appreciated. I have created a Jabber account and have downloaded services such as Pidgin, so do I chat on Pidgin with Jabber account or can chat on Jabber itself? Secondly, how do I find out on which Jabber server I am?
[17:53:02] <pierce27976> Pierce34535 - where you able to figure out how to use it?
[17:53:21] <pierce27976> sorry, were, not where
[17:54:11] <psa> hmm
[17:54:42] <psa> pierce27976: did you use Pidgin to register the account, or did you register it on the web such as at https://register.jabber.org/ ?
[17:55:42] <pierce27976> I registered the Jabber account on the web and then installed Pidgin from the web and created an account with Pidgin
[17:56:01] <psa> ok
[17:56:08] <psa> where on the web did you register the account?
[17:56:43] <pierce27976> from here: http://www.jabber.org/create-an-account/
[17:57:08] * Peter joined the chat.
[17:57:24] <psa> ok
[17:58:01] <psa> so if you created an account at https://register.jabber.org/ then your account is at jabber.org so your JabberID is something like myusername@jabber.org
[17:59:53] <pierce27976> Thanks. If I understand it correctly, I can use that ID to chat on Pidgin? And Jabber itself doesn't have IM facility, right?
[18:01:27] <louiz’> no
[18:01:39] <louiz’> Jabber is the “protocol” used by pidgin to chat with people
[18:01:50] <louiz’> (actually, one of the available protocols)
[18:02:00] <louiz’> So, you can connect to Jabber using pidgin.
[18:02:31] <pierce27976> Thanks. So if somebody says I want to chat with you on Jabber, they mean service like Pidgin or Empathy, right?
[18:03:03] <louiz’> no, they can use any software they want (pidgin, empathy, gajim…)
[18:03:10] <louiz’> and you can use any client too.
[18:03:27] <louiz’> As long as you give them your JID (username@jabber.org), you can chat with them
[18:04:05] <louiz’> Pidgin, empathy, gajim etc are just differents way to connect to Jabber. You will have the same contacts as long as you connect to the same account.
[18:04:13] <pierce27976> okay, thanks for clearing that up, was really confused. Now, second question: How do I find out which Jabber server I'm using or on which server I am on?
[18:04:41] <louiz’> as psa said, if you registered your account on http://www.jabber.org/create-an-account/ your server is jabber.org
[18:05:13] <pierce27976> okay, thanks
[18:05:33] <louiz’> But you can talk with someone who is not on the same serveur. For example my jid is something@louiz.org, because I use the server on louiz.org, but I could still talk with you if you gave me your JID.
[18:05:53] <louiz’> So, the server you’re using is not really that important
[18:06:09] <pierce27976> okay, thanks. Really, really appreciate it.
[18:06:16] <louiz’> you’re welcome :)
[18:06:53] <psa> pierce27976: in this respect, jabber is basically just like email, except faster ;-)
[18:07:15] <louiz’> indeed, I always forget to use that analogy :p
[18:08:43] <pierce27976> lol! Thanks. Actually, the person who wants to talk to me had asked me which Jabber server I was using... and that had confused me.

[19:59:02] <Tobias> in english is it "runtime graph model" or "runtime-graph-model"?
[19:59:36] <psa> heh
[19:59:41] <psa> probably not all hyphenated
[19:59:52] <Tobias> what does what hypenate, what not?
[19:59:58] <Tobias> *one
[20:00:19] <psa> it's complicated :)
[20:01:35] <Tobias> does one need to hypenate at all?
[20:02:12] <psa> not much
[20:02:26] <psa> most people don't know the rules, so they simply don't hyphen things any longer
[20:02:43] <Tobias> /me doesn't know the rules either...but would be interested in them
[20:02:54] <Tobias> are those rules the same for AE as for BE?
[20:03:04] <psa> probably not ;-)
[20:04:03] <Tobias> /me is just working on translations of possible bachelor thesis titles
[20:05:59] * Z_God left the chat.
[20:06:12] <psa> in the olden days, run-time was probably hyphenated, and then the hyphen disappeared as the word was used more frequently -- similar to web-site and e-mail
[20:07:06] <Tobias> right..so in history two seperate words will get hyphenated at some point, and then afterwards they may be written altogehter?
[20:07:09] <Tobias> :)
[20:08:08] <psa> yes
[20:08:55] * Z_God joined the chat.
[20:10:03] <Tobias> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_compound#Hyphenated_compound_modifiers aaaaahhhhhh
[20:12:37] <Tobias> but graph model is probably a compound noun
[20:14:54] <psa> that page is helpful
[20:15:28] <psa> "runtime graph-model" looks strange to me :)
[20:15:55] <psa> so many rules...
[20:16:02] <Tobias> and "runtime graphmodel" not? :)
[20:16:18] <psa> I'd keep them as separate words, myself
[20:16:31] <Tobias> probably right choice of society to reduce usage of hyphens altogether
[20:17:23] <psa> mostly, yes
[20:19:51] <Tobias> psa, so what are you doing with all the free time you now have after you reduced your IETF work?
[20:20:34] <psa> catching up :)
[20:20:43] <psa> some internal Cisco stuff
[20:20:59] <psa> trying to finish various specs related to internationalization
[20:21:06] <psa> starting to actually write some code once in a while
[20:21:08] <psa> selling my hosue
[20:21:10] <psa> house
[20:21:23] <psa> playing my new electric bass
[20:21:24] <psa> etc.
[20:21:25] <Tobias> selling your house? moving someplace else
[20:21:39] <psa> yep, house is sold, now we need to figure out where to move :)
[20:21:55] <Tobias> don't you figure that out first usually?^^
[20:22:05] <psa> sometimes :)
[20:23:27] <Tobias> heh
[20:25:13] <Tobias> psa, do you know whether cisco's destkop sharing tool uses RDP?
[20:25:23] <psa> I have no idea :)
[20:30:27] <psa> BTW my first code project is a Lua script for generating Unicode codepoint tables, because I need that for my work on the PRECIS framework specification
[20:31:34] <Tobias> i hope i can use some lua for my bachelor thesis code somewhere
[20:38:02] <psa> Tobias: English has all sorts of dark corners and ambiguous areas -- another that I just ran across is double consonants, such as "traveling" (with one "l", seems to be preferred by most folks although I like "ll") vs. things like "formatting" and "preferred" (where we always use double consonants)
[20:42:38] <psa> I love it when people send me email messages in which they worry about various security aspects of the jabber.org service, but they don't use PGP ;-)
[20:43:57] <Tobias> they just know the half of it ^^
[20:59:14] <psa> working to get below 50 messages in my inbox, I've just come across a message from someone in Bali who wants to use the Jabber.org lightbulb logo for his small electric shop on the island of Bali
[20:59:30] <psa> I receive some strange requests ;-)
