[14:46:23] <Jon> I'm looking into implementing a end-to-end secure web chat application using XMPP, and so far I've found E2E [ http://xmpp.org/rfcs/rfc3923.html ] and XTLS [ http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-meyer-xmpp-e2e-encryption-02 ]. Are there any other end-to-end standards that may be interesting, or does anyone have any suggestion for one approach over the other?
[14:50:48] <Jon> RFC 3923 seems a whole lot simpler. :)

[20:57:08] <Jon> Hey guys! Sorry for disappearing earlier, but I thought my messages were not received by the channel.
[20:59:35] <Jon> I'm searching for end-to-end encryption protocols for XMPP instant messaging and having a hard time figuring out what to use. The only thing I have found that is complete is E2E, but there are some extensions that are drafts or deferred, such as XTLS and XEP-0250: C2C Authentication Using TLS. Does anyone have any insight to give me around this? :)
[21:08:15] <Tobias> figuring out what to use or what to implement?
[21:11:27] <Jon> Tobias: My end goal is to develop an easy-to-use web chat client.
[21:11:58] <Tobias> well...is it important for you to interop with other clinets
[21:12:01] <Tobias> *clients
[21:12:37] <Jon> Not particularily, while, of course, it would be a good thing. :)
[21:13:00] <Jon> The primary attributes are ease-of-use and security.
[21:13:07] <Jon> And, availability. Like in browser.
[21:13:13] <Jon> web browser*
[21:14:45] <Tobias> well...current solutions out there are mostly OTR and little PGP based
[21:15:17] <Jon> Sorry, I must be confusing you. Ease-of-use is for the web client itself, not the end-to-end encryption protocol I'm looking for.
[21:15:26] <Jon> Ah, I see.
[21:15:47] <Tobias> nope...not confused...pidgin and a lot other clients support OTR based crypto
[21:15:57] <Tobias> but protocol wise it has a couple issues for XMPP IIRC
[21:16:08] <Tobias> Psi supports PGP based encryption for messages
[21:17:14] <Jon> PGP for message stanzas only, or for IQ/presence as well?
[21:17:46] <Tobias> messages stanzas only AFAIK
[21:18:10] <Tobias> http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0027.html
[21:20:39] <Jon> Thank you, you gave me some good stuff to google. :)
[21:20:53] <Tobias> you're welcome
[21:21:48] <Jon> Are the OTR problems are related to extendability?
[21:22:29] <Tobias> well...i.e. doesn't work with multiple resources, doesn't use XMPP's disco for discovery, and more issues
[21:24:19] * Asterix left the chat.
[21:26:04] <Jon> I guess E2E [ http://xmpp.org/rfcs/rfc3923.html ] would work... And it is a approved standard, after all.
[21:27:27] <Kev> I don't believe that's true, I think it's a Proposed Standard.
[21:29:35] <Jon> Oh, maybe I shouldn't assume that standards are approved just because the document doesn't say "Draft"... :P
[21:30:21] <Kev> Draft is one step ahead of Proposed.
[21:30:50] <Jon> Okay. Anyway, I'm open to any other suggestions related to this. I'll be around for a bit longer if someone has any suggestion one way or another. :)
