[14:16:40] <drасо> Kevin: my room almost never empty, and shockingly the room configuration is also resetted
[14:24:49] * the ♚ joined the chat.
[14:35:39] * Donovan joined the chat.
[14:35:43] * Minos joined the chat.
[14:36:40] <Donovan> every room appears to have had it's settings blown away (or was destroyed), including rooms which were well-occupied when the server went
[14:37:02] <Donovan> including this one, I see
[14:37:18] <drасо> Yes, this room also destroyed
[14:37:59] <drасо> will it be destroyed temporarily or will be like forever?
[14:39:00] * Altartouse joined the chat.
[14:39:25] <Donovan> You'd have to ask a server admin ... and they'd need to know what happened. If it restarted and the stored configs were just unreadable, that's one thing. If they were lost, then perhaps a backup can be restored. If that can't happen, it's manual fun time on a grand scale. :)
[14:40:03] <drасо> That's a disaster
[14:40:18] * Altartouse left the chat.
[14:40:27] <Donovan> less so than the Dreamhost debacle, but it isn't good, no
[14:40:52] * naw left the chat.
[14:42:23] <drасо> Well i hope it would be a temporary event
[14:42:25] <Donovan> What I find interestingly strange is that even though the owner/admins/moderator settings for the rooms were lost, the room topics carried over
[14:43:20] <Donovan> (going by the examples I have, that is)
[14:43:22] <drасо> I can?t even enter my own room now, i supposed someone has taken it over
[14:43:34] <drасо> Can't*
[14:43:37] <Donovan> Yeah, it's just like the Bad Old Day on IRC, isn't it? :)

[16:01:11] <Bard> Can anyone recommend an xmpp server package for a shared hosting account?
[16:17:31] <louiz’> prosody, ejabberd
[16:17:37] <louiz’> for example
[16:17:43] <louiz’> but it depends on what you want
[16:17:51] <Bard> ty
[16:17:52] <louiz’> You can also want commercial support with other servers
[16:18:23] <Bard> an open system is preferred yes
[16:19:08] <Bard> but this is a shared hosting plan with limited access to ports and installation of libraries
[16:19:24] <louiz’> open system as in open source? I know of prosody, ejabberd, openfire. Sorted using my personnal preferences.
[16:20:01] <louiz’> you will need to listen on two ports
[16:20:04] <Bard> open as in being not just local, but able to connect to the general xmpp network
[16:20:18] <louiz’> ah. Any server can do that, of course
[16:20:34] <Bard> ok
[16:21:09] * psa joined the chat.
[16:21:12] <louiz’> also you should not write all your messages in blue
[16:21:19] <Bard> i am a complete newbie in this
[16:21:57] <Bard> I am starting from the jappix documentation
[16:22:40] <Bard> ok
[16:23:23] <Bard> thx
[16:27:57] <louiz’> jappix is just a client
[16:29:35] <Bard> I'm beginning to understand that.
[16:29:47] <louiz’> ok
[16:30:20] <Bard> their recommendation is ejabberd for use with their client
[16:30:49] <louiz’> yeah, possibly, prosody lacks some features at the moment, I think
[16:30:58] <psa> Bard: in general, you can use any server you'd like
[16:30:59] <louiz’> feature used by jappix, that is
[16:31:06] <psa> louiz’: really? which features?
[16:31:07] <psa> ah
[16:31:08] <psa> ok
[16:31:11] <psa> I don't know jappix
[16:31:24] <louiz’> psa, the microblogging things, using pep etc
[16:31:35] <psa> aha, perhaps
[16:31:37] <Bard> Please note that your BOSH server should take the CORS specification in charge. Prosody's BOSH, ejabberd's one, node-xmpp-bosh, Punjab and Palladium work fine with this, but Openfire one doesn't seem to have support for this (in this case, you will need to use a proxy).
[16:32:12] <psa> Bard: Openfire is pretty much abandonware now, although a few volunteers still accept patches
[16:32:46] <Bard> Ah. Thx for that. I was investigating it.
[16:32:58] <Bard> Jappix recommends you ejabberd because of its strength, and of its compatibility with all the Jappix tools, mostly because of microblogging which doesn't work correctly in Prosody (0.7 and less) and others.
[16:33:08] <louiz’> yes
[16:33:31] <louiz’> but ejabberd is also harder to configure and troubleshot
[16:33:36] <louiz’> (troubleshout?)
[16:33:58] <louiz’> but yeah, it’s quite robust, once it’s working
[16:34:31] <Bard> well, they do say Prosody V0.7 or smaller, any idea what the current rev level is?
[16:36:11] <Bard> Ah, nvmd, Prosody 0.8.2. Thx.
[16:38:50] <louiz’> yes, but it’s not 100% functionnal even with 0.8.2, If I remember correctly, but I’m not sure, I never use this thing.
[16:39:05] <louiz’> Anyway, that’s an issue only if you intend to use microblogging stuff, anyway
[16:39:57] * peter joined the chat.
[16:40:30] * psa left the chat.
[16:40:53] <Bard> Ok. and I don't, so prosody sounds like the place to start
[16:41:34] <louiz’> yeah
[16:41:40] <peter> weird
[16:41:45] <louiz’> what is?
[16:42:07] <louiz’> your disconnection?
[16:42:34] <Bard> Thx for the pointers louiz'
[16:42:36] <peter> louiz’: the room configuration changed for this room
[16:42:50] <peter> louiz’: e.g., the owner and moderator lists are wrong
[16:43:02] <peter> also for the jdev room
[16:43:08] <louiz’> oh
[16:43:23] <louiz’> Someone reported an issue like that, somewhere, on a jabber.org room
[16:43:33] <louiz’> that was here actually
[16:43:48] <louiz’> 13:13:20 drасо> Is there any problem with jabber.org?many room was deleted
[16:44:01] <peter> louiz’: I'm checking
[16:45:44] * Kev joined the chat.
[16:45:58] <peter> in any case, I'm a site admin so I can fix things :)
[16:46:36] * Kevmin joined the chat.
[16:48:01] <Bard> peter: if I may, since you are a site admin, a friend sent in a password recovery request for his jabber.org id 2 weeks ago but has had no response. Is there anything to expedite this?
[16:48:35] <Bard> peter: the request was via email
[16:49:56] <peter> Bard: I am many months behind on password recovery requests
[16:51:05] <Bard> peter: ok. thx. I guess he will just have to create a new id until then.
[16:51:13] * treebilou left the chat.
[16:51:23] <drасо> peter: did something happen with jabber.org recently?i think all the room config went error, i can't enter my room. I suppose somebody enter my room when the configuration has error, and now he/she take over my room
[16:52:19] <peter> draco: it seems that we lost all the room configs, but we're checking on that now
[16:52:30] <peter> draco: what is your room?
[16:52:53] <drасо> Ok, thank you peter :-) i'm looking forward for the good news
[16:53:06] <drасо> peter: indonesia@conference.jabber.org
[16:53:12] <peter> ah yes, that one
[16:53:30] <drасо> Yes, that is the one
[16:54:04] <peter> draco: fixed
[16:54:32] <peter> draco: please join that room and we can chat there
[16:54:58] <drасо> And some of my private rooms, mavita@conference.jabber.org and usa@conference.jabber.org
[16:55:03] <drасо> Ok
[16:55:04] <Bard> peter: I just checked that my room had also lost it's configuration, but thankfully no one had tampered with it.
[16:55:27] <Kev> We should be able to reinstate all rooms, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
[16:55:31] <peter> ah, ok
[16:56:02] <drасо> I still got this error message peter Error: not-acceptable: null
[16:56:16] <Bard> Kev: ok, thx. so you will just reinstate all the rooms?
[16:56:43] <peter> draco: try again
[16:57:22] <drасо> I can enter now
[16:57:24] <Kev> Bard: We'll try and do that, yes.
[16:57:35] <Kev> There'll be a rollback involved, but we should be able to manage it.
[16:57:57] <Bard> Kev: Np. Thx.
[16:58:30] <Donovan> /me waits semi-patiently :)
[16:59:04] <Kev> It won't be the next 5 minutes, I'm afraid.
[16:59:11] <peter> /me nods
[16:59:21] <drасо> peter: it seems that the configuration is not roll back to the previous state
[16:59:34] <peter> draco: it's not!
[16:59:35] <Bard> Kev/peter: Btw, just checking, but logging for rooms is disabled by default, correct?
[16:59:40] <peter> Bard: yes
[16:59:43] <Donovan> wasn't expecting a short timeframe, kev/peter
[16:59:55] <peter> draco: that was a quick interim fix to give you temporary ownership
[17:00:05] <peter> draco: we need to do a general rollback
[17:00:08] <Donovan> (because I can tell that something broke the colorful expletive out of it)
[17:00:21] <drасо> I think i'll just reconfigure it again
[17:00:27] <drасо> Ah i see
[17:00:35] <Bard> peter/Kev: thx for all the assistance.
[17:00:49] <peter> draco: you can simply wait for the rooms to be restored properly
[17:00:55] <drасо> Thanks peter/kev :-)
[17:00:55] * mctotaldestroy joined the chat.
[17:01:03] <drасо> I will
[17:01:16] <peter> Donovan: I can do the same quick fix for your room if needed
[17:01:30] <Donovan> wouldn't hurt. private?
[17:01:35] <peter> Donovan: sure
[17:01:39] <mctotaldestroy> hey there folks, i was wondering if anyone may be willing to help a newb figure a few things out?
[17:02:28] <mctotaldestroy> i'm hoping to set up a chat for a project i'm working on, and was wondering how to password secure it?
[17:04:32] <peter> mctotaldestroy: howdy
[17:04:44] <Bard> mctotaldestroy: I'm a newbie too, but from my experience, the xmpp client you are using should have conference room configuration controls available.
[17:06:33] <mctotaldestroy> *nods* fantastic
[17:07:17] <Bard> mctotaldestroy: for example, in the Pandion client, under the Actions menu there is a place to configure conference room
[17:08:00] <mctotaldestroy> Bard: that's awesome, thanks!

[17:53:51] <Kev> I think it's a configuration error at the moment.
[17:53:55] <Donovan> something like that, Neustradamus ... it's not loading the room configs for some reason
[17:54:28] <Neustradamus> ok :/
[17:54:50] <Donovan> look at the bright side, all we have to do is wait for Kev :)
[17:58:20] <Kev> And Kev doesn't have anything better to do with his Monday night...
[17:58:46] <Donovan> What, no sports on at the pub?
[18:00:39] <peter> posted an update to identi.ca / Twitter
[18:00:57] <Kev> Ta.
[18:01:09] <Donovan> /me looks at the telly schedules and sees that there really aren't any sports on

[19:35:35] * peter left the chat.
[19:35:47] <manu_> i just discovered someone put a password to enter the room ...
[19:35:58] <psa> manu: are you still in trouble? we had some problems earlier today, but that should be fixed now
[19:36:20] <manu_> yep, i'm currently in trouble
[19:36:29] <manu_> (you may check too)
[19:36:50] <psa> strange
[19:37:13] <psa> please join now
[19:37:17] <psa> I removed the password
[19:37:27] <manu_> great
[19:37:46] <manu_> but i'm not moderator anymore
[19:37:51] <psa> Kevmin: perhaps not all rooms were restored correctly?
[19:37:57] <psa> manu_: I can fix that, too
[19:38:08] <manu_> is the affiliation list lost ?
[19:38:22] <psa> manu_: yes
[19:38:29] <psa> manu_: we lost all affiliations
[19:38:31] <psa> BUT
[19:38:33] <psa> we restored them

[19:43:44] <Kevmin> We merely reinstated them.
[19:43:56] <psa> right
[19:44:10] <Kevmin> If the room was edited *and* the persistence bit was set in the interim, it's that state that we'll have reinstated.
[19:44:26] <psa> yeah
[19:44:48] <psa> /me hangs out in the Esperanto room for learning purposes

[20:09:12] <rdorsch> Hello, I have trouble with using http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0080.html on jabber.org, it works very rarely, for me non-deterministically.
[20:10:06] <rdorsch> The location broadcasting client is empathy with azimuth on a Nokia N900, on the receive side, I have an empathy on Debian testing.
[20:10:34] <Kev> PEP data isn't persisted at the moment - so if we restart the server (as we've done a couple of times today), you'll need to re-publish.
[20:10:48] <Kev> Or PEP data aren't persisted, rather.
[20:10:49] <rdorsch> Does anybody know, if there are problems with xep-0080 on jabber.org? If not, is there an easy way to understand which side (the n900 or the debian box) has the problem?
[20:11:16] <Kev> As far as I know, subject to the proviso above, PEP's working fine on jabber.org.
[20:11:44] <rdorsch> Kev, the n900 is updates the location data every few seconds (?)
[20:12:28] <rdorsch> Hmm...do you have a PEP enabled client, i.e could you check if I currently send out pep data?
[20:13:12] <Kev> Is there some sort of debug log for the N900 client?
[20:13:19] <Kev> That would be the easiest way for you to check.
[20:14:36] <rdorsch> Hmm.....I need to check

[20:19:34] <rdorsch> Just wanted to currect one of my previous statement, n900 is using telepathy + azimuth, it is not using empathy.

[20:33:42] <rdorsch> Did not find an obvious logging capability in the n900....need to continue another time.
[20:35:31] <psa> I love it when people send me password requests in their native language, expecting that I'll understand Russian or Italian or whatever

[22:10:35] <Z_God> is anyone here coming to fosdom?
[22:10:40] <Z_God> fosdem*
[22:10:53] <Z_God> I saw there would be an XMPP summit as well
[22:12:24] <Z_God> I live really close to Brussels now, so I'm very interested in fosdem at least & I wonder about the XMPP summit :)
[22:12:35] <psa> yes, lots of us will be at FOSDEM
[22:13:48] <psa> details at http://wiki.xmpp.org/web/FOSDEM_2012 and http://wiki.xmpp.org/web/Summit_11
[22:14:16] <Z_God> ok :)
[22:14:56] <psa> brb

[22:16:16] <Z_God> it would be really cool to see some of the big people & attend presentations, I understand it's all quite open?
[22:18:53] * Tobias left the chat.
[22:18:54] <psa> yes!
[22:19:04] <Z_God> cool :)
[22:19:08] <psa> it's all free as in beer and free as in speech
[22:19:37] <MattJ> I'll be there :)
[22:19:40] <Z_God> it's kinda stupid of me actually, I moved to a town close to Brussels a few months ago
[22:19:59] <Z_God> and only recently I found out there is this huge event there
[22:20:04] <psa> heh
[22:20:20] <Z_God> I never looked into those things much before, because I was always too far away from them in the past
[22:20:46] <psa> well, if it is convenient I would definitely recommend that you participate
[22:20:55] <psa> FOSDEM is kind of crazy, but in a good way :)
[22:21:06] <Z_God> sure, I can be in Brussels within an hour :)
[22:21:15] <Z_God> and it'll be right after my exams
[22:27:39] <Z_God> I understand the xmpp summit is very technical, but I see it's also planned after fosdem
[22:28:43] <Z_God> it wish I could invest some more time in Psi+ & Jingle, but it seems it's all quite tricky
[22:29:50] <Z_God> I am also not sure what the other developers are doing, because there were quite big plans, but it seems they didn't materialize
[22:30:05] <psa> Z_God: Friday is for interop testing and hacking and a few informal talks, Monday is more like brainstorming about hot topics
[22:31:06] <Z_God> what kind of interop testing?
[22:31:15] <Z_God> are there jingle experts there?
[22:31:22] <psa> maybe :)
[22:31:45] <psa> if you're interested in Jingle, I would chat with some of the Jitsi folks on Saturday or Sunday
[22:31:47] <Z_God> I was once testing Psi+ with Jitsi together with Emil Ivov, but we couldn't easily figure out what was causing the issues
[22:31:55] <Z_God> there was only one way audio
[22:32:21] <Z_God> I managed to repair psimedia a bit quite a while ago, so the Psi+ guys considered me the psimedia person from then on for a while...
[22:32:30] <Z_God> I barely know the code though unfortunately
[22:32:48] <Z_God> and I know very little about how these streams are established
[22:33:40] <Z_God> also I would really like to see interoperability with the official branch of asterisk
