[13:05:24] <dAnjou> hi, i have a domain (let's call it mydomain.de) and a jabber account on draugr.de (i'm not admin there). now i want to be able to use name@jabber.mydomain.de as kind of an alias for name@draugr.de. is this possible somehow?
[13:14:43] <Kev> Pretty much not.
[13:15:14] <Twey> You could maybe have some sort of forwarder on jabber.mydomain.de?
[13:15:27] <Kev> Twey: It doesn't really work that way.
[13:15:40] <Kev> You end up with issues because of presence subscriptions etc.
[13:15:45] <dAnjou> the jid is in the login stanza
[13:15:50] <dAnjou> afaik
[13:16:20] <Twey> Kev, can't it just translate all references to jabber.mydomain.de to draugr.de incoming, and vice versa outgoing?
[13:16:53] <Kev> Twey: You could hook something up, but you'd need a specialist client/server to do so.
[13:17:13] <Kev> The easier thing to do is probably just to use an XMPP transport - or even to migrate accounts completely.
[13:18:07] <Twey> Right
[13:18:40] <dAnjou> transport for domains? my domain provider does not support jabber
[13:20:06] * pinchartl joined the chat.
[13:20:25] <pinchartl> hi
[13:21:24] <Kev> 'lo.
[13:22:22] <dAnjou> it would be nice, if you can "associate" domains with you jabber account
[13:22:56] <pinchartl> Kev: how are you doing ? any update on the S2S issues ?
[13:23:02] <dAnjou> but i didn't think it through .. maybe it's bullshit
[13:23:52] <Kev> dAnjou: If you want to host an XMPP account on a domain you own, but don't want to run an XMPP server, you can set the DNS SRV records to point to some service that allows you to bring your own domain (I think flosoft.biz does, for example) and use that.
[13:24:33] <Kev> pinchartl: Only that I believe Peter is contacting/has contacted Google to see if they have any data they could share, and that we're continuing to investigate the short outages we're seeing.
[13:24:52] <pinchartl> Kev: OK, thanks for the update
[13:26:13] <dAnjou> Kev: thought about that but i don't want another account .. although i could set things up so nobody would notice
[13:27:22] <Kev> One of the strengths of XMPP is the lack of forwards - that is, it's easy to assert someone is who they say they are. If you start introducing anonymous forwards, this becomes a much harder problem.

[14:06:38] <kittenpaw> Hi
[14:07:14] <louiz’> hi
[14:07:25] <Twey> Hello
[14:07:32] <kittenpaw> What is the Jappix?
[14:07:51] <louiz’> a jabber client on the web
[14:07:51] <Twey> Jappix is an XMPP provider and a Web-based client software.
[14:08:13] <louiz’> yeah, jappix.com is also an XMPP provider
[14:08:19] <kittenpaw> an open social network?
[14:09:12] <Twey> You could style it as such
[14:09:43] <louiz’> it includes some microbloging features, yes
[14:09:57] <louiz’> but XMPP is already a social network.
[14:10:07] <Twey> http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0277.html — it implements this, is all
[14:10:08] <louiz’> It depends on what you mean by “social network”
[14:10:17] <Twey> (on top of the usual XMPP stuff)
[14:10:32] * roton25 joined the chat.
[14:11:53] <roton25> Hy
[14:13:20] <louiz’> hi
[14:14:16] <roton25> How to use xml script
[14:15:10] <louiz’>
[14:15:17] <louiz’> not that again
[14:16:01] <Twey> I am confused by the question.
[14:16:08] <roton25> Why:s
[14:16:49] <louiz’> I guess he heard somewhere that you can “hack” XMPP clients on nimbuz or whatever using XML scripts, am I right? :D
[14:17:05] <Twey> Because XML is not a ‘script’, it's just a data format
[14:17:23] <Twey> And because you used it to send that message ☺
[14:17:33] <Kev> Twey: Which makes it a script, does it not? :)
[14:18:51] * naw joined the chat.
[14:19:32] <roton25> Do you know about the xml console in your jabber client:d
[14:19:50] <Kev> I know a little about the XML console in my Jabber client, yes.
[14:20:34] <roton25> :d
[14:21:55] <roton25> Xml script are copied in this console and then send for some purpose
[14:23:32] <roton25> It is one kind of xml script <iq to="TARNSPORT-1"type="set"id="discoResult"><query xmlns="jabber:x:data"type="submit"><field var="username"type="text-single"><value>YOUR_NEW_ID</value></field><field var="password"type="text-private"><value>PASSWORD</value></field><field var="server"type="text-single"><value>nimbuzz.com</value></field><field var="domain"type="text-single"><value>openfire.nimbuzz.com</value></field><field var="port"type="text-single"><value>5222</value></field></x></query></iq>
[14:24:18] <louiz’> yes, that’s XMPP. We know. And?
[14:24:56] <Twey> Kev: I generally think of a ‘script’ as being written in a Turing-complete language…
[14:25:59] <Kev> Twey: I think the traditional definition is just a document that's transmitted in some manner, but within your definition XML documents wouldn't be scripts, indeed.
[14:27:04] <Twey> Kev: The technological definition comes from the idea of an actor's ‘script’ as a list of instructions to follow
[14:27:42] <Twey> E.G. Wiktionary: ‘(computing) A file containing a list of user commands, allowing them to be invoked once to execute in sequence.’
[14:28:37] <Kev> Or, indeed "(linguistics) A system of writing adapted to a particular language or set of languages." :)
[14:29:42] <roton25> Actually what we are talking are come to our client as such type of xml language what i have seen you in the above
[14:30:42] <louiz’> yeah, XMPP
[14:30:53] * kittenpaw left the chat.
[14:31:27] <Kev> roton25: Right, a number of people here know a bit about XMPP.
[14:32:05] <Twey> Kev: in the linguistic sense, it's a set of glyphs; ASCII would be a more accurate analogy :þ
[14:32:11] <roton25> You can enable your xml console in you client and you will see our chat message are coming to you in the xml format
[14:32:24] <Kev> Twey: Except it's UTF-8, but sure :)
[14:32:27] <Link Mauve> Yes, that's XMPP.
[14:32:29] <Link Mauve> roton25,
[14:32:44] <Kev> roton25: Yes, we know this. A number of people here know quite a bit about XMPP.
[14:33:04] <louiz’> :)
[14:33:40] <Twey> Kev: Nah, it's the character-set bit that's relevant, not the encoding :þ Unicode maybe. But that's confusing because it contains many different scripts in the real linguistic sense. :þ
[14:33:42] <louiz’> “and did you know that you can send messages by just entering those complicated XML thing in your XML console? Amazing!“
[14:33:51] <Twey> *gasp*.
[14:34:12] <roton25> If it is xmpp so why the option are named as xml console
[14:34:14] <Kev> Twey: Good point, well made :)
[14:34:29] <Kev> roton25: Because XMPP is constructed from XML fragments.
[14:34:30] <Link Mauve> Twey, I'd say a script is an Unicode plan.
[14:34:49] <Twey> Ah, somebody else who uses that phrase! I was beginning to think I'd made it up.
[14:35:19] <Twey> roton25: XMPP is an ‘application’ of XML — XMPP is written using XML in much the same way that English is written using the Latin alphabet. ;)
[14:36:53] <louiz’> did you know that you can send messages to your friend by writing those complicated latin letters on a paper in an envelop and sending that through “la post” (don’t know the english term)?
[14:37:28] <Kev> louiz’: "The post", predictably :)
[14:37:30] <Twey> louiz’: ‘The post’ ;)
[14:37:55] <louiz’> ok :)
[14:37:56] <Kev> French is just English with s/the/la/ and a funny accent, right? :)
[14:38:03] <louiz’> exactly :D
[14:38:18] <louiz’> exactement, even.
[14:38:31] <Twey> Or vice versa, possibly :þ
[14:39:05] * roton25 left the chat.
[14:39:06] <Kev> Twey: Oh, no, not at all, French has stolen lots of English words and phrases.
[14:39:10] <Kev> Oh well, c'est la vie.
[14:39:29] <louiz’> :D
[14:39:32] <Twey> Kev: Not a fifth as many as English has stolen from French
[14:39:56] <Kev> That was lost, I feel :(
[14:40:01] <Twey> Heck, about two-thirds of our vocabulary was stolen from French at one point or another
[14:40:04] <Twey> No, I got it :þ
[14:40:49] * roton25 joined the chat.
[14:41:28] <roton25> Hi
[14:42:18] <louiz’> hi again
[14:42:29] <louiz’> yes, we know about XML and all that stuff
[14:42:46] <louiz’> do you need something?
[14:43:22] <Twey> ‘Do you know how to use TCP scripts to talk with other computers?!’
[14:43:27] <Link Mauve> It the opposite, french has put its words into english. :p
[14:43:35] <Twey> Haha, touché
[14:43:41] <louiz’> :D
[14:43:42] <Link Mauve> Or frenchs.
[14:45:58] <roton25> :d
[14:46:22] <roton25> Ya i want to know about tcp
[14:47:10] <Twey> http://books.google.com/books/about/Sams_teach_yourself_TCP_IP_in_24_hours.html?id=bAH4o7TVLcIC
[14:47:34] <Kev> http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596521271 for XMPP, of course ;)
[14:48:10] <Twey> Woah, I didn't know this book exists. I should buy it.
[14:48:24] <louiz’> yes
[14:48:32] <Kev> Everyone should buy it.
[14:48:37] <Kev> Ideally a half-dozen copies.
[14:49:02] <roton25> What can we learn by this book
[14:49:20] <Twey> Kev: Let me guess, you're getting royalties? ;)
[14:49:23] <Kev> roton25: In the XMPP one? A lot about the 'XML Scripts' you were talking about earlier.
[14:49:25] <Twey> roton25: XMPP.
[14:49:32] <Kev> Twey: Not, sadly, in any meaningful way.
[14:49:35] <Kev> But yes.
[14:49:50] <Twey> Are you Kevin Smith?
[14:49:58] <Kev> Yes.
[14:50:22] <Twey> What does ‘not in any meaningful way’ mean?
[14:50:34] <Kev> I won't be retiring off them any time soon.
[14:50:52] <Twey> Because of lack of sales, or a bad deal?
[14:51:26] <Kev> We weren't really expecting sales to be up there with Harry Potter, and they're not :)
[14:51:36] <louiz’> oooh, too bad :(
[14:51:38] <Twey> Fair
[14:51:50] <Twey> Maybe they will increase with Google+ and so on getting more popular, though.
[14:51:58] <Kev> (Nor was that why we wrote it, we largely wanted there to be a good book on XMPP)
[14:52:13] <Twey> *nod*
[14:52:53] <roton25> I want to to know what type of chat room is this
[14:53:23] <Kev> roton25: "What type"? It's a XEP-0045 MUC room, where the discussion topic is Jabber and it's meant to be a help room.
[14:54:21] <roton25> It is run under jabber server
[14:54:34] <roton25> Is not it
[14:54:35] <louiz’> yes
[14:54:59] <louiz’> It runs thanks to XML stuff
[14:55:16] <louiz’> properly constructed to respect the XEP 0045
[14:55:29] <roton25> Are you a stuff of jabber server:d
[14:55:40] <louiz’> what
[14:55:44] <louiz’> I’m not a stuff, no
[14:56:56] <roton25> So who will help us the stuff of jabber or anyone:s
[14:58:13] <roton25> :)
[14:59:02] <roton25> How many rooms are existed like it in this server
[14:59:08] <Kev> roton25: I'm not sure you've asked for any help yet, have you?
[14:59:25] <Kev> There are around 3500 rooms on this server (last time I checked), most of them empty.
[15:01:02] <roton25> In what way you check the room list
[15:01:54] <Kev> Most clients have some method for listing rooms on a server.
[15:01:59] * dAnjou left the chat.
[15:02:28] <roton25> Oh ya

[15:06:54] <Kev> That's not relevant to the topic.
