[09:37:58] <Simon Tennant> Tobias: hopefully a little more. Clients (web or mobile) send a stream of beacon data (wifi, cell-tower, GPS) to a server using XEP-0255. the server returns a location. Taking it further, a location service lets the user bookmark places and automatically checks them back into that location when it detects them at the same pattern.

It's just a pattern that the server matches without needing to know where it is.
