[00:32:07] <Jonathon Conte> hi all
[00:32:22] <louiz’> hi
[00:32:45] <Jonathon Conte> My friend accidentally added a malformed JID to her contact list and I haven't found a client that will let me remove it.
[00:33:15] <Jonathon Conte> Her XMPP account is on jabber.org. Is there anyone who could force the server to purge that malformed JID?
[00:34:34] * Z_God left the chat.
[00:35:17] <mathieui> Which ones did she try?
[00:35:38] <Jonathon Conte> pidgin & empathy
[00:36:40] <mathieui> What is the jid like?
[00:36:47] <Jonathon Conte> Her account is puneefa@jabber.org
[00:36:49] * jefferson42654 joined the chat.
[00:36:59] <Jonathon Conte> the malformed JID is devin885@gmail
[00:37:23] * jefferson42654 left the chat.
[00:38:40] <mathieui> Jonathon Conte, deleting that in pidgin works for me
[00:38:46] <Jonathon Conte> it appears to delete
[00:38:53] <Jonathon Conte> but I don't think it actually removes it from the server
[00:39:16] <Jonathon Conte> it just removed it from the GUI temporarily
[00:39:31] <Jonathon Conte> anyway, that's what happened last I tried it
[00:42:31] <mathieui> The contact is still deleted in pidgin here, with my own server/account
[00:42:43] <Jonathon Conte> hmm, I'll try again
[00:42:47] <Jonathon Conte> what version of pidgin are you using?
[00:42:50] <mathieui> which version of pidgin?
[00:42:53] <louiz’> This is not a malformed JID, so it should be removed.
[00:43:05] <mathieui> 2.7.10 herre
[00:43:06] <mathieui> -r
[00:43:21] <Jonathon Conte> cool, thanks

[10:57:02] <alpenjodler> hi
[10:57:36] <alpenjodler> I'm new to jabber but I enjoy it a lot ^^ But I have a hard time with priorities
[10:58:40] <louiz’> Like what?
[10:59:03] <Lastwebpage> in simple words, online resource with the highest priority get the message
[10:59:09] <naw> if you are connected to the same account from 2 clients at the same time (say user@jabber.org/resource1 and user@jabber.org/resource2) and somebody sends a message to user@jabber.org, the message will be delivered to the resource with higher priority
[10:59:16] <alpenjodler> I want every message I receive to be sent to every connected resource
[10:59:24] <alpenjodler> like it does in Skype
[10:59:46] <naw> I think that resources with negative priority doesn't get messages delivered to the bare jid (user@jabber.org)
[11:00:08] <naw> some servers do that, some don't
[11:00:10] <alpenjodler> that way, I'll see the message whenever I'm near any of my clients and don't have to worry about priorities and statusses at all ^^
[11:00:16] <alpenjodler> ahh, okay
[11:00:25] <naw> I think that gmail does it, at least until you answer from one client
[11:01:12] <Lastwebpage> a negative priority get the message only if the sender use JID+resource, if I am not wrong
[11:01:42] <alpenjodler> yes, but I want the opposite
[11:01:51] <alpenjodler> "always get the message"
[11:02:08] <alpenjodler> and I want it on all connected clients ^^
[11:02:25] <alpenjodler> is there a jabber server that does that?
[11:03:27] <naw> I don't know :(
[11:03:44] <alpenjodler> ^^
[11:07:13] <Lastwebpage> I am too lazy to search around in the xeps at the moment, but read this: http://blog.roobix.net/2010/02/jabber-xmpp-resources-and-priorities.html
[11:08:25] <Lastwebpage> set all priorities to the same value should work

[20:50:23] <taiga> Hi. Is anyone here using a gateway/transport to interface with another service? It's a fascinating idea, but I can't find much information about it.
[20:51:12] <HedgeMage> taiga: Some servers offer them, some don't. You can perform service discovery via your client to find out about your server.
[20:51:23] <HedgeMage> taiga: I use it for a few legacy aim contacts, that's about it.
[20:51:37] <HedgeMage> I'm trying hard to nudge everyone over to Jabber
[20:53:19] <taiga> Thanks so much.
[20:53:41] <taiga> I know a lot of people who use Skype.
[20:55:04] <taiga> The big advantage with Skype is they can do instant messaging and turn it into a voice/audio call at will. Does Jabber offer a similar functionality? If not, it will be hard to nudge them.
[21:03:12] <HedgeMage> taiga: Jabber has extensions for that ... the problem afaik is client and server support for those extensions. Jingle is the voice one, I forget what the video one is.
[21:03:15] <misha> some clients support Jingle audio/video chat
[21:04:07] <misha> jingle is just a signalling protocol, it tells how and what to stream\send, it may be video/voice/files/XML streams - anything, but usually people associate it with voice, yes :)
[21:04:23] <Kev> HedgeMage: Jingle's actually jsut a signalling protocol, Voice and Video are both things it can be used to negotiate.
[21:04:35] <Kev> What misha said :)
[21:04:48] <Tobias> and hopefully soon *working* filetransfers too :D
[21:04:50] <HedgeMage> hehe :)
[21:05:10] <Kev> Tobias: Sure, code it for Swift for GSoC if the XSF's accepted :)
[21:05:24] <Tobias> Kev: no problemo :P
[21:06:04] <Tobias> p2p network hell must be fun
[21:06:08] <misha> the problem with xmpp is that it offers *too* many options. and roughly quoting one of the adblock developers 'users get frustrated when you offers about which they *don't care*" :(
[21:06:16] <misha> imho, of course
[21:06:36] <misha> offers options*
[21:06:38] <Kev> Tobias: The big problem is working out how to transport stuff.
[21:07:21] <Kev> GTalk uses UDP, I don't know if that's strictly necessary or if you could get away with TCP + upnp or such.
[21:07:56] <Tobias> Kev: yup, i mean there ICE, that jingle-nodes stuff, etc. and then the transport TCP or UDP, like you've said
[21:08:16] <Kev> I *suspect* you do need to do some hacky UDPness to get reasonable connection rates, but who knows.
[21:09:33] <misha> i think it was easier to support udp because they already send/recieve udp for voice/video
[21:09:42] <Tobias> i think UPnP/NAT-PNP will highly increase success rates with normal TCP, since i guess most users have this stuff enabled
[21:09:44] <misha> in browser
[21:09:47] <Tobias> or is that a false guess
[21:10:03] <Kev> Tobias: I don't know - I'd love to have it enabled, but it never seems to really work for me :)
[21:10:23] <Tobias> works nice here for some clients of a different protocol ;)
[21:10:41] * Felsoof joined the chat.
[21:10:47] <Kev> Well, my 360 usually fails to get upnp working from my router.
[21:10:58] <Tobias> what kind of router is that?
[21:11:06] <Kev> But I have a slightly strange network - my dhcp server isn't the router, and the router then refuses to upnp unless it gave out the lease itself.
[21:11:16] <Tobias> ah..ok
[21:11:19] <Kev> No idea, my provider rebranded it and gave it to me.
[21:12:35] <taiga> Thank you all for answers.
[21:12:40] * taiga left the chat.
[21:13:09] <Tobias> Kev: yeah..i'm trying to get my current setup replaced with a more featureful one by my provider...currently i have to run three boxes (modem, IAD and my own wlan router). with a Fritzbox 7570 that'd hopefully reduced to just one, but no more than two
[21:13:24] <Felsoof> Hello
[21:14:42] <Felsoof> :dntknw:
[21:15:03] <Felsoof> Beloved
[21:15:18] <misha> oh, not again

[21:17:09] * taiga joined the chat.
[21:17:15] <Felsoof> misha: What's your problem
[21:17:33] <Kev> Tobias: Having only one routing box sounds appealing. I have one VM doing DHCP/DNS, a WAP and a router.
[21:18:06] <stpeter> /me tries to finish writing the Brussels trip report for xmpp.org
[21:18:14] <Tobias> stpeter: yay
[21:18:43] <Tobias> Kev: WAP and router being different boxes?
[21:18:50] <Kev> Right.
[21:18:58] <Tobias> ahh..k
[21:19:34] <Felsoof> Bay
[21:19:36] * Felsoof left the chat.
[21:20:20] <Tobias> i really dislike having 3 boxes..each box needs its power adapter in some socket, all the cables, etc...just annoying
[21:20:42] <Kev> Right :)

[22:59:27] <cgtdk> o.o Sorry, I'm very new to XMPP. I have no idea what that is.
[22:59:27] <cgtdk> :(
[22:59:31] <Kev> It depends on the number of users, the number of off-server contacts they have, the type of traffic they're doing :)
[22:59:42] <cgtdk> Just a single user
[22:59:48] <Kev> Very very little, then.
[22:59:51] <Kev> Assuming the average user.
[22:59:59] <cgtdk> Probably less than average
[23:00:24] <cgtdk> well
[23:00:26] <cgtdk> thanks :)
[23:00:56] <Kev> There'll be no problem at the end of a DSL line.
[23:01:12] <Kev> If you're at the end of a modem, it's probably ok.
[23:01:26] <Kev> If you're trying to do this over HF radio, there are certain considerations... :)
[23:01:31] <louiz’> :)
[23:01:42] <Kev> (Yes, we do run XMPP over HF radios)
[23:01:46] <cgtdk> lol
[23:02:18] <cgtdk> Well, was thinking about setting up my own server on my 25/2 home connection (up/down)
[23:02:32] <cgtdk> but of course, there's still latency
[23:02:32] <Kev> Bytes, K or M?
[23:02:33] <cgtdk> hmm
[23:02:36] <cgtdk> Mbps
[23:02:39] <Kev> Haha.
