[02:58:30] <bush62026> So I turned on Google Talk briefly to test Google+ on my Apps account, where I also self-run a standalone XMPP server (ejabberd, on Debian.) I turned Google Talk back off and now I'm having serious issues getting my local server to work correctly, and am looking for more information to troubleshoot it.
[02:58:48] <bush62026> Does anybody here know if it could be an issue with some kind of federation issue to jabber.org?
[02:59:28] <bush62026> I'm seeing some things in /var/log/ejabberd/ about connecting to gmail.com and google.com for validation, but it appears they're successfully connecting and I don't know exactly what's happening.
[02:59:31] * bush62026 in now known as jpg.
[03:02:43] <jpg> psa: re-nicked, but hello
[03:02:47] <psa> bush62026: this is a Google Apps problem, because now your DNS entries might be screwy

[03:02:51] <psa> jpg: ok
[03:03:23] <jpg> psa: that's what I was wonderidng, but I didn't think they had rights to my DNS
[03:03:46] <psa> well
[03:04:52] <psa> I'm in a meeting in Taipei right now so I don't have attention to look at it, but I recall seeing similar problems in the past
[03:04:54] <jpg> http://bugs.bitlbee.org/bitlbee/ticket/638 seems to be the same thing and was closed as a Googlefail - if I wait a day or two will DNS unscrew itself, or will I have to try contacting Apps support somewhere?
[03:05:33] <jpg> (not that you guys are directly related to bitlbee, obviously)
[03:07:31] <psa> jpg: when you do the Google Apps thing, they set up SRV records so that XMPP connections will go to their service
[03:10:09] <jpg> Yeah, I've set up Apps-specific DNS entries for mail and calendar and so on, but explicitly turned off and didn't do Chat, and wasn't prompted for DNS updates when I turned it on briefly, so I'm not sure what I need to do to fix it. :/ Hoping waiting a while will resolve it, as it's only been a few hours, but I dunno.
[03:10:35] <jpg> and of course I can't find anything in the Apps admin panel indicating DNS controls
[03:20:51] <psa> if you want to mention the domain name, I can look into it further
[03:21:33] <psa> anyway I need to run to my next meeting here, bbiab

[03:23:41] <jpg> psa: narbondel.org
[03:24:14] <jpg> psa: I'll be around a while longer, but I'm on hotel wireless with a dhcp lease I can't manually renew, afaik, so I might drop off. If I'm around I'll be back when I do, though.
[03:25:11] <jpg> psa: appreciate the help

[04:30:45] <psa> jpg: I'm sort of back
[04:32:41] <jpg> psa: cool
[04:33:50] <jpg> psa: I'll be calling it a night sooner than later, probably, but I'll stay logged in til the hotel wifi boots me, and check in tomorrow if it's still giving me issues (unless you have any more quick suggestions to try)
[04:33:59] <psa> well, 'dig -t SRV _xmpp-server._tcp.narbondel.org' doesn't return any SRV data, so that seems OK
[04:35:16] <jpg> fwiw, Bitlbee connects up fine, but it doesn't pull my buddy list and I can't chat with people I know are online (talking to them from another account/interface)
[04:35:56] <jpg> Getting stuff like this in the log, no idea what is and isn't normal: http://pastebin.com/xd41XAvd
[04:39:32] <jpg> I also eventually get "I(<0.551.0>:ejabberd_s2s_out:892) : Closing connection with jabber.org: timeout" in that log as well, which is one of the reasons I figured I'd pop in here.
[04:49:52] <jpg> Out for a while; will check back in a few hours if my connection drops and/or Jabber doesn't sort itself out
[04:49:54] <jpg> thanks for the help so far

[13:18:51] <Kev> jpg: I was missing a lot of the context from the backlog. Feel free to explain again.
[13:31:33] <jpg> Kev: in short, I'm self-hosting ejabberd on narbondel.org, and running Google Apps on the same domain with Google Talk turned of. I briefly turned Google Talk on to test out Google+, then turned it back of, and now the ejabberd accounts @narbondel.org will connect in my client but don't ever pull down a buddy list or work to chat with people I know are online.
[13:31:38] <jpg> out the door for work, bbiab
[13:32:16] <Kev> Ok. Are the people it won't connect to on other Google Talk servers, or normal deployments elsewhere on the Internet?
[13:32:21] <Kev> e.g. can you s2s to jabber.org?
[13:33:22] <jpg> Kev: I'm not sure - I have some log snippets at http://pastebin.com/xd41XAvd and get an eventual timeout "I(<0.551.0>:ejabberd_s2s_out:892) : Closing connection with jabber.org: timeout" in /var/log/ejabberd/ejabberd.log, but I don't know enough about XMPP to say for sure.
[13:33:25] <Kev> Yes, just checked and jabber.org will s2s fine.
[13:34:02] <Kev> I've just managed to get a disco response showing that you run rooms, an irc gateway (not working), a proxy (not working) pubsub (not working) and a user directory (not working) on it.
[13:34:43] <Kev> I'll still be here in an hour :)

[14:47:54] <jpg> I'm back.
[14:48:37] <Calutron> again... hello, my English is not god. How can i setup a BOSH server in jabberd14?? Thanks for the help
[14:48:52] <jpg> Kev: based on your disco response, do you have any idea where the issue might be? I'm hoping it's some kind of weird routing/propagation issue that'll clear up on its own, but I don't know for sure.
[14:49:23] <Kev> Calutron: Google for 'punjab BOSH' or similar.
[14:49:33] <Kev> jpg: Based on that response, your s2s is working fine with 'the Internet'.
[14:50:14] <Kev> That's not to say that it's working fine with GTalk contacts - it's entirely possible that, as you once enabled GTalk on your domain, all GTalk contacts will now trcy to use GTalk servers for your domain, or such.
[14:50:35] <jpg> Ick. Do you have an @jabber.org I could add to my blist as a test?
[14:50:42] <Kev> You don't need to.
[14:50:56] <Kev> If you can join this MUC using your account, for example, you know it's working ok.
[14:53:54] <jpg> Hm, not sure how I can join a MUC with Jabber. Looking around to test now.
[14:53:56] <Calutron> Kev: punjab is/have/need python twist?
[14:54:21] <jpg> Kev: any idea where I'd be able to escalate for a check from the GTalk guys? I can't find any actual support mechanism and use the free version of Apps.
[14:56:36] <Kev> Calutron: Yes.
[14:56:57] <Kev> jpg: Connect with a client (Swift, Psi, Gajim, whatever), and there should be a reasonably obvious path somewhere.
[14:57:26] <Kev> jpg: And there is a support mechanism for GTalk, but I don't recall exactly where it is.

[15:19:43] <jpg> hm

[16:11:45] <jg> test
[16:11:49] <louiz’> test
[16:11:56] <jpg> okay so it's looking like a GTalk issue, pretty surely
[16:12:15] <jpg> cause JG is my @narbondel.org Jabber account, getting into an @jabber.org MUC.
[16:12:27] * jg left the chat.
[16:21:47] <jpg> Kev: is this a known issue with GTalk's services, do you know? It seems like it would have come up before.
[16:21:58] <jpg> They've effectively broken federation, no?
[16:22:15] <Kev> I'm aware that people have had significant problems with federation in the past if they've got a domain that's hosted with Google Apps.
[16:22:37] <Kev> I think it's less broken than it used to be - I think these days as long as you have the correct SRV records in place, GTalk won't 'take over' XMPP for the domain.
[16:22:45] <Kev> Or shouldn't, anyway.
[16:25:21] <jpg> I haven't got any SRV records at all, but neither does Google have control over my domain.
[16:25:39] <jpg> Think setting SRV records would help, or are we going to have to escalate to someone at Google?
[16:26:40] <Kev> When I say 'take over', I mean that the GTalk service will reply on behalf of the domain, instead of trying to federate for it.
[16:27:05] <Kev> It doesn't need control of e.g. DNS on your behalf, the service just doesn't bother trying to look up your domain, pretending it services it itself instead.
[16:27:09] <jpg> got it
[16:27:46] <Kev> If this *is* what's happened to you, you'll need to either find a way to undo it through your settings somewhere (which I have heard is not possible, but I have no experience here) or somehow contact support.
[16:27:59] <Kev> http://www.google.com/support/talk/ ?
