[13:55:39] <Kev> In fact, the Push Notifications themselves (and various other things, like Face Time) use Jabber as well.

[17:25:43] <Tanguy> Anthony, it is realy easier to develop a software for Android than for iPhone.
[17:25:51] <Tanguy> For Android, you need the freely available SDK, I think.
[17:26:45] <waqas> I think the iPhone SDK is free as well. It's running it on a device which requires a paid license.
[17:26:58] <Tanguy> For iPhone, you need MacOS X (to use MacOS X, you need a MacIntosh). You need to learn Objective C. You need to get Apple to sign your software.
[17:27:27] <waqas> That's partially true.
[17:27:41] <waqas> Objective C isn't required. C/C++ work fine.
[17:27:57] <jameschurchman> well, you can run a hackinstoh too, or os x in a vm
[17:27:59] <Tanguy> The first step costs money. The second step costs time. The third step costs money and prayers.
[17:28:11] <waqas> A hackintosh works great :)
[17:28:12] <jameschurchman> and iphone user buy a lot more apps
[17:28:18] <waqas> Software needs to go through the Apple process only if you publish to the AppStore.
[17:28:22] <jameschurchman> (per person, they spend much more)
[17:28:44] <jameschurchman> waqas do you have a mackintosh?
[17:28:49] <waqas> I do not.
[17:28:54] <Tanguy> About hackintoshes: I do not want to speak about means that are infringing contracts. Do not do that, it is forbidden.
[17:28:54] <jameschurchman> i have a mac pro, so no need
[17:29:11] <waqas> Tanguy: I'm not using one :)
[17:29:18] <Tanguy> waqas, software is only runnable on the iPhone if it has been signed by Apple.
[17:29:27] <jameschurchman> but its an intresstign option for ppl dabbling
[17:29:35] <waqas> Tanguy: Or if you have jailbroken the iPhone.
[17:29:48] <Tanguy> About jailbreaking: I do not ant to speak about means that are infringing contracts. Do not do that, it is forbidden.
[17:30:06] <waqas> It isn't. There was a court decision lately about it.
[17:30:13] <jameschurchman> yeah thats true, and the worst point in my opinion, its a shame apple don't offer an un-aproved and un supported but open and easy way to get any software on your phone with out JB
[17:30:33] <Tanguy> Anyway, I was just meaning that the fact that there is Jabber software for Android does not mean at all that there is Jabber software for the iPhone.
[17:30:51] <Tanguy> Because anyone can write a usable Jabber software for Android.
[17:31:01] <Tanguy> And this is not true for the iPhone.
[17:31:21] <waqas> What is the argument here by the way? :)
[17:31:35] <Tanguy> For instance, if Apple does not want Jabber software to run on the iPhone, it will not.
[17:31:48] <jameschurchman> but yeah none of those are points that would discorige me, for a mac, just buy one, they are zoo much better just in build quality :-) and a 2nd hand mac mini can be had for a tiny amount of money, plya by apples rules and you should be ok... objective c is a steep learning curve and not useful for much stuff non-apple related..
[17:32:23] <jameschurchman> yeah thats true.. but they have no problems with jabber in an iphone app, so thats fine
[17:32:41] <Tanguy> For now yes. Nobody can tell what the future will be.
[17:32:53] <jameschurchman> guess so, but i think that its unlighty
[17:33:08] <jameschurchman> cant see what they would have against it
[17:33:26] <Tanguy> The only thing I know is that, on my devices, who decides what can and cannot run is me, and only me. And that I will never buy a computer where that very principle is not true.
[17:33:47] * coolidge43455 joined the chat.
[17:34:11] <jameschurchman> yeah thats a fair point...
[17:34:17] <Tanguy> jameschurchman, nobody could see why Amazon would have removed paid books from Kindle users. However, they did.
[17:34:38] <waqas> Sadly that doesn't work that well. I don't think there are any good phones which are entirely open source.
[17:35:31] <Tanguy> Before that, everyone was saying that, yes, theu had the possibility to do so, but that they had no reason to do so, and that theu would never do such a think, that it was simply no acceptable.
[17:35:32] * Neustradamus joined the chat.
[17:36:19] <Tanguy> waqas, there is another category between free and locked.
[17:36:39] <Tanguy> Closed, but open as a platform.
[17:36:39] <waqas> Both?
[17:36:48] <waqas> That's fine.
[17:37:48] <Tanguy> And, if I prefer free systems, I accept to use closed ones that are open platforms. But never, ever a locked platform. I am the one that decides what can and cannot run on my systems, this is a right I shall never surrender.
[17:38:01] <Tanguy> As who can, and cannot enter my home.
[17:41:07] <jameschurchman> yeah
[17:41:15] <jameschurchman> (soz had phone call)
[17:41:20] <jameschurchman> i doo agree entitly
[17:41:49] <jameschurchman> it would be great to think that there will be a truly opensource phone that you can do everything
[17:42:15] <jameschurchman> im sure it will come, but in the meantime i want a phone that can email, web brows, get my slignplayer on etc...
[17:42:31] <jameschurchman> im prepared to put up with it for the moment :-)
[17:43:26] <jameschurchman> i think the really scary thing is the user tracking for adds, thats actually worrying
[17:43:33] <jameschurchman> so what phone do you use?

[17:58:44] <Tanguy> jameschurchman, I am not speaking about free systems, but about open platforms, that do not need to be free.
[17:59:08] <Tanguy> jameschurchman, if I had the need for a smartphone, which I do not, I think I would have a Nokia N900.

[18:10:57] <jameschurchman> yeah n900 looks a good device, there were lots at the xmpp summit
[18:11:49] <Tanguy> But, as I said, I have currently no need for such a device. :-)
[18:12:15] <jameschurchman> hah you surely do!!
[18:13:38] <Tanguy> No I do not, because I would need some contradictory characteristics.
[18:13:52] <jameschurchman> how come?
[18:14:20] <Tanguy> Like: a big screen, but a small form factor to fit ni my pocket along with my keys, my knife and my parking bip.
[18:14:31] <jameschurchman> i agree that total contol over your device is nice, but no control what so ever (a la befoe the iphone) was def worse
[18:14:41] <jameschurchman> hmm supose
[18:15:14] <Tanguy> Before the iPhone? Blackberry.
[18:15:38] <Tanguy> I do not think they control what you can and cannot run, do they?
[18:15:55] <jameschurchman> well, before smart phones where you could not run any apps at all
[18:15:59] <Tanguy> Or: any Java smartphone.
[18:16:22] <Tanguy> I disagree.
[18:16:43] <Tanguy> A telephone that does not allow to run external software is only a tool, not a platform.
[18:16:48] <Tanguy> No need to be open.
[18:17:25] <jameschurchman> yeah, but you could consider the iphone 90 % open, its only not open when apple decide it not to be. a telephone is 100 % closed
[18:18:04] <jameschurchman> i dod obv favour 100 % open over 90 any day, but i would also favour 90 % over 0 % any day also :-)
