[15:42:17] <jcdyer> Hello,
[15:42:36] <MattJ> Hi
[15:42:45] <jcdyer> I'm trying to figure out how to authenticate an xmpp session using netcat.
[15:43:02] <jcdyer> Is this the right place to ask about that?
[15:43:05] <MattJ> First question - why netcat? :)
[15:43:06] <MattJ> Sure
[15:43:38] <jcdyer> Because I want to see exactly what's getting sent back and forth between the client and the server.
[15:43:58] <jcdyer> I'm trying to work throught the XMPP:The definitive guide book.
[15:44:08] <jonas> jcdyer, if you try a client which can provide you with raw xml data, like psi and gajim, you dont need to do it in netcat
[15:44:13] <jcdyer> And since all the examples are raw xml, I think I'll understand it better.
[15:44:23] <jonas> just go enable the xml log, and see what is sent back and forth
[15:44:32] <jcdyer> Cool.
[15:44:37] <MattJ> +1
[15:44:52] <jcdyer> I tried doing that in pidgin, but it wouldn't let me start logging until the session was already authenticated.
[15:45:24] <Zash> you can in gajim
[15:45:52] <jcdyer> Awesome.
[15:46:26] <Zash> but, it should be possible to do PLAIN auth with netcat
[15:46:45] <Zash> or legacy, if available
[15:46:50] <jcdyer> So I can get up to a <success/> message,
[15:47:11] <jcdyer> but then it complains at whatever I try to do next.
[15:47:30] <jcdyer> The book says the server should restart its stream at this point, but I'm not seeing that, which I suspect is the problem.
[15:47:56] <jcdyer> And by "complains," I mean this: http://pastebin.com/YNgGRcr8
[15:48:54] <jcdyer> (I can authenticate to my localhost jabberd2 server just fine using pidgin)
[15:49:29] <MattJ> jcdyer, the client initiates stream restarts
[15:49:37] <MattJ> (the same way it sends the first stream header initially)
[15:49:50] <jcdyer> Do I need to close the first stream?
[15:49:53] <MattJ> No
[15:50:03] <MattJ> The old stream is abandoned, and a new one set up
[15:50:17] <jcdyer> OK. I'll give that a shot. Thanks.
[15:52:23] <jcdyer> Also, do any of the python libraries have a "verbose" mode that will log the xml somewhere or print it?
[15:54:37] <MattJ> Most likely - though I'm not familiar with any of them to tell you how
[15:56:16] <Florob> This is indeed wrong in the book though :/
[15:56:36] <jcdyer> Yeah. It says the server immediately starts a new stream. :(
[15:57:00] <jcdyer> Thanks for your help. This seems to be working.
[15:59:43] <Florob> Heh, the note on option features is outdated too... Maybe making notes on the status of a still changing draft was not that good an idea...
[16:01:09] <Zash> Florob: that tends to happen to IT books, since IT moves so fast :)

[20:24:48] <loxs> Anyone around here writing XMPP stuff in Common Lisp?
[20:25:16] <Tobias> heh
[20:25:17] <Tobias> :)
[20:26:11] <MattJ> loxs, no, but Lua... :)
[20:27:20] * Kev left the chat.
[20:28:09] <loxs> MattJ: I know about lua :)
[20:39:10] <jonas> loxs, i have done it some times
[20:39:22] <jonas> i suggest lisp-jabber or cl-xmpp
[20:39:44] <jonas> (never really tried the latter one)
[20:40:00] <loxs> jonas: does anyone of them support writing components?
[20:40:59] <jonas> yes, think so, but you'd have to double check
[20:41:18] <jonas> at least lisp-jabber does
[20:42:27] <loxs> yes, I searched xmpp lisp so much and never searched lisp jabber :)
[20:42:54] <jonas> http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~henoch/text/lisp-jabber.html and http://common-lisp.net/project/cl-xmpp/
