[10:00:36] <ppj63s> hi
[10:01:17] * yuppinturic left the chat.
[10:02:32] <ppj63s> First time here. Can someone give me hint how to establish a tranport via ubuntu-jabber.de to ICQ, my mobile has problems connectinv via t-online, seems a common issue.
[10:02:35] * yuppinturic joined the chat.
[10:05:05] <Tanguy> ppj63s, unless you are an administrator of ubuntu-jabber.de, providing a gateway to ICQ is not up to you.
[10:06:32] <Tanguy> And using a gateway does not require anything more than your usual Jabber connection, by the network client point of view.
[10:06:41] <ppj63s> I am not an admin of uj and it is not my intention to provide a gateway. I would like to use a transport via XMPP to ICQ as a direct connect is not possible.
[10:06:58] <Tanguy> With Jabber, as a client you only connect to your Jabber server, and to nothing else.
[10:07:18] <ppj63s> Tanguy, how do I address the ICQ account via the usual Jabber connect?
[10:07:27] <Tanguy> Providing a gateway to another messaging system is your server's role.
[10:07:49] <ppj63s> Understand.
[10:08:02] <Tanguy> You cannot. If your Jabber server provides a gateway, you can use it: then your sever will connect to that foreign messaging system on behalf of you.
[10:08:28] <ppj63s> Can I use the server's gateway as a user?
[10:08:36] <Tanguy> You can, if there is one.
[10:09:06] <Tanguy> Sorry, I was not very clear. What you cannot do is to connect directly to ICQ by Jabber, as ICQ is not Jabber.
[10:09:11] <ppj63s> Tanguy, I understand, but how do I perform to use the servers service?
[10:09:18] * Milan.in joined the chat.
[10:09:24] <Tanguy> That depends on your Jabber client.
[10:09:30] <ppj63s> My provider is ubuntu-jabber.de
[10:09:52] <ppj63s> Pls consider I am not tooo familiar with the detials of IM so far.
[10:10:15] * GavYur joined the chat.
[10:10:27] <Tanguy> This Jabber server provides no ICQ gateway, or at least does not expose any.
[10:10:30] <ppj63s> Pidgin
[10:10:56] <Tanguy> I do not know Pidgin very well, but I think it should have some options about gateways.
[10:10:56] * Milan.in left the chat.
[10:11:19] <Tanguy> But as it is a multiprotocol client, it would be easier for you to directly connect to ICQ.
[10:11:22] <ppj63s> I searced the services and did not find such entry, now that you say ubuntu-jabber.de does not offer such service, i understand why i did not find it.
[10:12:03] <Tanguy> Now you may find an public ICQ gateway somewhere else, though I am unable to give you any.
[10:13:48] <ppj63s> Yes, from my main computer I am connectioin directly. Bought myself a Nokia N900 a week ago and am setting up all mobile and recognized, that the Oscar / ICQ protocoll is not being routed any more. It once functioned. My son also got a N900 and is facing the same problem. We both prefer XMPP with all its benifits, but all his friends are with ICQ and I would like to remain compatible so I am looking for a gate...
[10:14:18] <Tanguy> Okay, so in fact your problem is that you cannot connect directly because you have no Internet access, right?
[10:14:19] <ppj63s> No problem, I then know what to search for.
[10:14:34] <Tanguy> Well, search for another gateway, indeed.
[10:15:42] <ppj63s> Internet access yes, but not for the service ICQ, maybe the mobil internet provider t-online causes the problem. Google advised such massive problems, but I do not really know the cause, however I heared this is a common problem.
[10:16:20] <Tanguy> This is not an Internet acces then.
[10:16:27] <ppj63s> got any recommendations for an XMPP server?
[10:16:34] <ppj63s> Yes, not an access problem
[10:16:44] <Tanguy> If you find a public ICQ gateway you need not to change your server.
[10:16:50] <ppj63s> ok
[10:17:01] <Tanguy> No, I meant: the network access you have is not an access to the Internet.
[10:17:07] <Tanguy> Only an access to parts of the Internet.
[10:17:16] <ppj63s> ok
[10:17:24] <Tanguy> Cannot be sold as an Internet access, this would be a lie.
[10:18:11] <Tanguy> Please also complain to your network access provider. May work or not, but one thing is sure, they shall change nothing if nobody complains.
[10:18:55] <ppj63s> I think this is exactly the problem. The communicaton provider allows 'surfing', whatever this is, not the internet connection of a PC as they said and no VOIP, so I assume they are filtering the packets. VPN will probably also droppend other than extending the contract
[10:19:45] <ppj63s> I complained already in the way that I said, that the mobile phone is more or less a computer and that all the other small services like weather, XMPP are not 'sufing'.
[10:20:01] <Tanguy> Then you may simply want to connect through a tunnel, hidden as an false HTTPS connection.
[10:20:25] <ppj63s> Tanguy, thanks for you help, if I have similar questions, is it ok to ask here and take your time?
[10:20:27] <Tanguy> And actually going out from some computer that has access to the Internet. :-)
[10:20:30] * yuppinturic left the chat.
[10:21:01] <Tanguy> Yes it is, as long as it is related to Jabber. If nobody has time to answer, nobody will reply, that is all. :-)
[10:21:57] <ppj63s> In fact I need to set up a tunnel, VNP, but this is a comlete new area for me and takes ages with tons of googling etc and how to
[10:23:16] * buchanan21465 joined the chat.
[10:23:33] <Tanguy> Setting up an SSH server listening on port 443 and connecting to it with a -D switch would give you a SOCKS proxy.
[10:23:53] <Tanguy> Then it would be usable with any network client that supports SOCKS. Maybe Pidgin can.
[10:24:07] * naw joined the chat.
[10:24:54] * marseille joined the chat.
[10:25:14] <buchanan21465> i want a server for my site
[10:25:42] <buchanan21465> jabber server
[10:25:43] <Tanguy> A software server or a physical server? What do you call a site?
[10:25:49] <Tanguy> A software server then. :-)
[10:26:02] * yuppinturic joined the chat.
[10:26:06] <Tanguy> (the word “server” has two meanings…)
[10:26:23] <Link Mauve> There are some clients (like Gajim or Jappix) that support XMPP over HTTP, aka BOSH.
[10:26:27] <naw> you have several to choose http://xmpp.org/xmpp-software/servers/
[10:26:47] <Link Mauve> ppj63s, ↑
[10:27:01] <Tanguy> Several conversations are mixing up together, here…
[10:27:11] <naw> the more popular servers out there are ejabberd, prosody, openfire and tigase
[10:27:20] <ppj63s> Link Mauve, what du you mean please?
[10:27:30] <buchanan21465> i am using phpbb script and it says me to enter a server for jabber
[10:27:57] <Link Mauve> ppj63s, using a BOSH server, you can connect to XMPP through almost any non-Internet connection.
[10:28:13] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, what is this script supposed to provide?
[10:28:19] <Link Mauve> You can activate the one of your server, or use a public BOSH server.
[10:28:50] <naw> buchanan21465: then you may not want to setup your own server, but use a public server instead
[10:29:00] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, it looks like a specific Jabber client integrated in phpBB, so I guess it is asking you what is your Jabber account.
[10:29:19] <naw> http://xmpp.org/services/
[10:29:24] <ppj63s> Link Mauve, thank you for the hint, will follwow that way
[10:30:04] <buchanan21465> its flooderzmafia is my jaber id
[10:30:19] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, no, this is the local part of your JID.
[10:30:28] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, your JID also has a server part.
[10:31:41] <ppj63s> Link Mauve, for my understanding, if you talk about a non-internet connecton, you mean a TCP/IP connection with the provider without gateway, correct?
[10:31:42] <buchanan21465> i do not know about it help me how to get it
[10:32:03] <Tanguy> ppj63s, he meant a connection to parts of the Internet only, including web.
[10:32:12] <ppj63s> ok, thanks
[10:32:52] <naw> buchanan21465: create an account on a public server (e.g. jabber.org) and then add the account data to your phpbb configuration
[10:33:25] <Tanguy> ppj63s, but excluding Jabber. Some providers forbid almost anything except web access, so customers of them have to make everything go through twisted web connections.
[10:33:37] <buchanan21465> i have a account on jabber.org and my id is flooderzmafia
[10:34:04] <Tanguy> Link Mauve, he was trying to access to ICQ: he already had an access to Jabber, that was not blocked by his provider.
[10:34:13] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, then your server is jabber.org!
[10:34:19] <Link Mauve> Tanguy, ok.
[10:34:19] <ppj63s> I am getting clearer about this now, never thought that the inernet connections on mobiles are so heavily resctricdted.
[10:34:32] <Link Mauve> ppj63s, so you could use any public gateway.
[10:34:32] <Tanguy> They are *not* Internet connections.
[10:34:46] <Tanguy> They are connections to whatever you call it, but not Internet.
[10:35:50] <Link Mauve> ppj63s, you could choose one gateway amongst these: http://core.im/prosody/servers/servers.html
[10:36:04] <ppj63s> ok, very clear.
[10:36:28] <Link Mauve> Grayed gateway don’t allow users of other servers to access, but other don’t restrict you.
[10:36:30] <Tanguy> Internet v4 is: anything using public IPv4 connections. Internet v6 is the same, using IPv6. Restrict whatever on top of it, let us say, only TCP and UDP, UDP Lite and SCTP forbidden, TCP port 5222 forbidden, and this is not an Internet access.
[10:39:53] <Tanguy> ppj63s, just be aware that, by using anything but the official ICQ client to connect to ICQ services, you are violating your contract with America Online.
[10:40:13] <ppj63s> yes
[10:42:09] <buchanan21465> what is jabber server
[10:42:26] <ppj63s> Link Mauve, when you mention 'gateway', do you mean the IM Connection or the basic ICP/IP setting as gateway?
[10:43:25] * darkrain left the chat.
[10:43:25] <Link Mauve> ppj63s, with XMPP, client-side, you have to care about only one TCP/IP connection, all the other are transparent to you, it’s the job of your server.
[10:43:46] * darkrain joined the chat.
[10:43:51] <ppj63s> buchanan21465, a jabber server is a server providing services using the jabber or XMPP protocoll. jabber and XMPP as far as I know are the same.
[10:43:52] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, a Jabber server is a computer that provides a Jabber service, just like a mail server does for email.
[10:44:34] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, the Jabber server someone uses is written at the right of the @ sign on his address, just like email.
[10:44:36] <buchanan21465> what must i put in the phpbb script in jabber server
[10:44:44] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, so your Jabber server is jabber.org.
[10:44:44] <ppj63s> Link Mauvre, ok
[10:45:08] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, is that a script you are installing to your installation of phpBB?
[10:46:32] <buchanan21465> no its pre-istalld script
[10:47:13] <Tanguy> Is that an installation of phpBB that you are setting up, or are you just a forum user?
[10:48:56] <buchanan21465> i am setting up the phpbb
[10:49:13] <Tanguy> Okay. What is that script supposed to provide.
[10:49:14] <Tanguy> ?
[10:49:56] <buchanan21465> its working thak you guys
[10:50:15] <ppj63s> Link Mauve, in the server list, if an individual server offers multiple prodocols / services, it does not automatically mean that they offer transfer among these, so that I will check the individual web pages for their services correct?
[10:52:02] <Link Mauve> Huh?
[10:52:17] <Link Mauve> Web has nothing to do with XMPP.
[10:52:27] <Link Mauve> You should disco them instead.
[10:53:01] <ppj63s> maybe i am misunderstood. The listing does not show, if the severs offer transport, correct?
[10:53:40] <buchanan21465> how can i make my own chatting server
[10:54:09] <Link Mauve> ppj63s, it do, in the ICQ column, if the flower is green, the server provides an ICQ gateway.
[10:55:20] <ppj63s> and if the flower is grey, it means that they provide ICQ access but no transport?
[10:55:50] <Link Mauve> What is that access vs. transport?
[10:56:50] <ppj63s> http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/XMPP-Transport I do now know how to explain otherwiese
[10:57:35] <Link Mauve> Yes, I know what are transports, but not just “access”.
[10:57:36] <naw> buchanan21465: you mean install one? you can install a jabber server, and then users will be able to connent using their jabber clients, also you can install a web client so users can join the room through a webpage. Of course, if you only want chat, you can use a public server
[10:58:09] <Link Mauve> ppj63s, if the flower is gray, it’s just that it is only accessible to this server’s users.
[10:58:20] <naw> ppj63s: Link Mauve: grey means that they have a transport, but it only can be used by the users from that server
[10:58:48] <ppj63s> thanks
[10:59:10] <Link Mauve> naw, isn’t it what I said?
[10:59:26] <naw> e.g. jabber.example.org may have among their services msn.localhost, and when other servers try to resolve msn.localhost, they can't
[10:59:47] <buchanan21465> can you provide me a link to install
[10:59:49] <naw> yes
[10:59:54] <Tanguy> It is not even needed that it is called *.localhost.
[11:00:01] <naw> Tanguy: I know
[11:00:30] <Tanguy> Okay, that was to explain. :-)
[11:00:32] <naw> thay just can remove the jabber:iq:register from their features
[11:00:58] <Link Mauve> It could be any domain name, because as it is resolved by your server, only it has to know how to contact the component.
[11:01:29] <naw> buchanan21465: here you can see the servers that you can install http://xmpp.org/xmpp-software/servers/ (prosody should be easy) for details go to their webpages
[11:01:40] <naw> http://xmpp.org/xmpp-software/clients/ <- clients
[11:02:23] <naw> to have a webclient that only does chat (without requiring the user to have an account) take a look to muckl and speeqe
[11:02:25] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, you have a physical server, connected to the Internet and running all the time, that you can fully administrate, do not you?
[11:02:27] <buchanan21465> how can i put it on my webpage
[11:03:05] <buchanan21465> no i do not
[11:03:20] <Tanguy> Then forget it, you cannot provide a Jabber service.
[11:03:34] <Tanguy> To provide some you need a machine to host it.
[11:04:22] <ppj63s> Thanks guys! Will be off the screen for a while .
[11:04:43] <buchanan21465> i host it on a free hosting server
[11:05:12] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, for instance, I do: a small, low-power computer, connected by an ADSL line, on my flat.
[11:05:58] <buchanan21465> thats good
[11:06:02] <Tanguy> buchanan21465, it is a hosting service for what Internet services, exactly? If it is a mutualized web hosting, you just cannot provide a Jabber service with it.
[11:07:28] <Tanguy> It is not complicated, to provide a Jabber service you need a machine connected to Internet where to install it. If you do not have that, you just cannot, this is binary.
[11:10:01] <buchanan21465> its 000space.com
[11:12:15] <buchanan21465> have you heard about it

[13:24:25] <ppj63s> Hi, i am back again.
[13:25:14] <ppj63s> tried to find info about how to figure BOSH in der Pidgin / XMPP account set up menu, but have no idea how to manage this. Can somebody give me a direction to to?
[13:25:57] <naw> it's on the "advanced" tab
[13:26:24] <ppj63s> I probably need to enter the name of the BOSH server, but where can I find such one?
[13:26:26] <naw> I have pidgin in spanish, so the text translation may be different
[13:27:30] <naw> on ejabberd servers I think that is http://server.org:5280/http-bind/ although that can change from server to server
[13:27:37] <Tanguy> ppj63s, maybe your regular Jabber server can do BOSH.
[13:28:03] <naw> btw, jabber.org doesn't have BOSH activated
[13:28:12] <ppj63s> cannot open the above link in the browser for some reason
[13:28:25] <naw> it's not a link
[13:28:31] <ppj63s> so I just try to put the server name in the field and it works, no further config?
[13:28:44] <ppj63s> ubuntu-jabber.de
[13:28:45] <naw> it's just an example of a BOSH URL format

[13:29:10] <naw> try http://ubuntu-jabber.de:5280/http-bind/

[13:29:53] <Tanguy> Oooop.
[13:30:01] <Tanguy> Bad copy-paste, really sorry.
[13:30:14] <naw> I have to mention that we, at jabberes.org, have problems with BOSH and seems to be broken
[13:30:56] <naw> ppj63s: I think that ubuntu--jabber.de doesn't do bosh
[13:40:58] <ppj63s> I did enter one of the addresses ...ubuntu-jabber... into an existing account and it is still functioning. So may I assume, tha traffic is going through this protocol? Is there some way for me to check if the channel is actually working without heavier tools?
[13:41:08] * alice joined the chat.
[13:41:34] <αҜϊЯα> -
[13:42:52] <ppj63s> some independent questions from the issue before, what is the difference between the entries "connect Server" and "File transfer proxies", I assume that manual file transfers go over another server than the chat, but I do not know if this is the case.
[13:45:09] <αҜϊЯα> 0
[13:45:28] <naw> ppj63s: have you disconnected and connected again?
[13:45:35] <ppj63s> no
[13:45:40] <ppj63s> I will do so
[13:46:03] <naw> anyway, I think that it's not going to work
[13:47:50] * αҜϊЯα left the chat.
[13:58:26] <ppj63s> another question, when attemting to turn to private conversation via OTR the pidgin client returns an error msg similar "error setting up private conversation: ungültige Länge", the last two words stand for invalid lengh. Anybody an idea how this can be solved?
[13:59:05] <Tanguy> No idea.
[13:59:22] <naw> not all clients have OTR support
[13:59:37] <ppj63s> OTR support is installed.
[13:59:44] <ppj63s> on other machine it works, but not on this one
[13:59:53] <naw> yes, but do your contact have it too?
[14:00:16] <ppj63s> it is a test on two test accounts from me
[14:01:00] <naw> well, I don't know then
[14:01:06] <ppj63s> in another case I just got it working even half around the globe, but not from the desk to desktop :.(

[14:55:14] <Tanguy> I do not know what strophe is.
[14:56:26] <cheney40603> ohh ok
[14:56:52] <cheney40603> do u have any idea regarding chat clients developed using xmpp
[14:57:11] <cheney40603> we developed a chat client using xmpp,spectrum,ejabberd
[14:57:34] <cheney40603> but we have few issues to be solved
[14:58:48] * naw joined the chat.
[15:00:39] <Tanguy> What is you question?

[15:07:44] <jackson34425> Yah
[15:08:20] <cheney40603> We are developing a chat client using xmpp, ejabberd and spectrum for facebook, yahoo and msn. We are facing 2 problems, One is regarding the subscription notices from all contacts that are shown when we are logging in for the first time.We want to auto subscribe these subscriptions but we could not differentiate between a new add request and subscription request from contacts. Other problem is regarding the node name on which our contacts logged in, i.e we want to differentiate between the contacts that are logged in on our chat client from those who are logged in on other chat clients.
[15:11:19] <MattJ> For Spectrum issues it's probably worth asking in the Spectrum chatroom
[15:11:38] <MattJ> I believe they support Roster Item Exchange, which solves the mass-authorisation issue (kind of)
[15:11:42] <naw> but we could not differentiate between a new add request and subscription request from contacts. <- those are mostly the same we want to differentiate between the contacts that are logged in on our chat <- you can do that using Software Version (I think that is XEP-0092) or maybe use a fixed resource name
[15:11:54] <naw> but the client will be able to fake them
[15:12:05] <MattJ> I would use XEP-0115 and service discovery to detect the client version
[15:12:19] <naw> also, maybe the jdev room will be more adecuate for your questions
[15:12:22] <MattJ> Versioning every client in your contact list would be very bad :)
[15:13:02] <cheney40603> ok
[15:13:51] <cheney40603> thanks
